The previous book called Garlic Bread For Eugene is a lovely read. Young Henry explores his Jersey Shore neighbourhood as he prepares special garlic bread for his little brother, the way their late Dad used to make it.Lemonade for Eugene has a similar theme of young people interacting with the various adults in the neighbourhood. Henry and Eugene learn that a schoolmate's house will be sold if the bank forecloses on his lone parent father. They explore the seashore, a carnival and a pal's productive home-made lemonade stand as the tale unfolds.
The mood is older than in the first book, Henry being responsible for Eugene and also feeling responsible for resolving the house problem and preventing development. We also meet again the gruff school janitor with the big heart, who starts to find happiness with a lady just as that heart lets him down.
Young teen readers and preteens will find a lot to like in this ordinary community with its extraordinary people. This book is a good way to introduce young readers to the concept of community and thinking bigger, as well as dealing with the issues which confront many families. Well done, Michael Heath!

Lemonade for Eugene Michael Heath 9780578159867 Books Reviews
Lemonade for Eugene is a warm and caring story about two brothers, Henry and Eugene, who not only look out for each other but who genuinely care for the people in their local town, especially the ones who are in need of friendship. The characters are endearing and you get the sense of what it really feels like to grow up in a small town. The lessons they learn both obvious and inferred allow for great discussions. This book targets young middle school readers but as a teacher, I thoroughly enjoyed reading it as well and am looking forward to the next book.
