Okay. First of all, as a fan of horror and zombies, I want to say that the story was good. It flowed well, with a good, satisfying, politically charged ending. Some of the military aspects threw me off, especially the parts about introducing soldiers to superior officers, the dialogue about the gas masks, and the talk about the weapons when the soldiers are first inserted. I speak here from an American military view; it is entirely possible that things are done differently by our comrades across the pond.That being said, the dialogue is hard to follow. No, characters aren't throwing around ten dollar words that one has to reach for a dictionary to determine what the characters are talking about. There are no carriage returns between speakers. It was easy to get off track with which characters were currently speaking. In many parts of the book there were also places where it seems as if a sentence was revised but the sentence being replaced was not removed. Some typos, phantom punctuation, all mistakes that I feel would be easily remedied with even a cursory examination by an editor.
That being said, Smith has a hell of a story. I felt like it could have been a lot longer than it was, but he got right to the point with it which was nice. It was a fast read, I finished it in a couple of hours.

I couldn't believe how I sucked into this book got . I loved how the author sets up the story just after things started happening. This is set as the military in the background , our group of spunky zombie killers are all from the military. Jack is our unlikely hero trying to keep everyone together. They keep moving and hunting and just trying to survive .
Jack is the type of character that you will want to be in your corner . he is tough and yet he cares for all of the survivors . He is all man but also has a caring side . He and the rest of the survivors. They make a great team and will do anything to survive .
This was a great story , that flowed really well. The characters were well developed and you can't help care about them . They will make you laugh and you will shed some tears along the way . There is action from the very first page , you will be sitting on the edge of your seat through the whole story. You can tell the author poured his all into his characters . This is the first book I have read by this author and I cant wait to read more .
Good set-up put in place that'll explain the mission and why a team and the few who survive a insertion into their dead country, go and disobey orders, when finding out that the "bug" didn't cause the great nation to die down to every last person. That no virus is lying around in dead bodies, waiting to infect the living. Instead they find no bodies and some very frightened suvivors. After using the limited ammo to free some young kids and and a few more living people, the time and place to be extracted comes. Stay and help or leave? And what will happen to the suvivors on the roof? Oh I forgot to mention the flesh eating Zombies? Because they are everywhere and they're hungry and coming!
Loved the action of this book. But also a good story line. I didn't mention that there is some evil characters, that our good guys; Jack and Frank just can't stomach? I've already bought Pt.2, I do that when a book has captured my attention.
Dead & Alive Survive is a fast paced novel about a particularly brutal zombie apocalypse. After a missile of unknown origin explodes over England, a deadly virus claims the lives of most of the inhabitants and the country is abandoned and sealed off to the rest of the world. A military platoon is assigned to a dangerous mission to purportedly rescue a scientist trapped on the main land who might hold the secret of neutralizing the virus and reclaiming England as a habitable country once again. When the platoon, lead by an inexperienced corporal who is supported by seasoned war veteran Jack, is dropped off in London a few blocks from the building where the scientist is staying, all hell breaks lose. The city is filled with a very deadly and aggressive race of zombies. The mission quickly becomes a fight for survival against formidable odds. It doesn't help that the surviving humans are lead by a band of bloodthirsty degenerates intent on rape and pillage and who in ways are worse than the zombies. It soon becomes apparent that the mission is not what it was represented to be by the military authorities, and the members of the platoon may actually be expendable. Peril threatens from all sides, and no one is to be trusted! Non-stop action, interesting characters,and unexpected plot twists make this book an enjoyable read. Dead & Alive Survive is a compelling first volume in what promises to be a very entertaining series.
If you like the zompoc genre then you will love this book. The author doesn’t mess around with details and needless fluff. he grabs you by the back of the neck and by the seat of your britches and tosses your butt right into a stinking mess of zombie guts and limbs.
It starts with little to no preamble then smashes into your head like a baseball bat into a watermelon and with the same results, yeah a mess.
The story follows the same vein as we have become accustomed to..military , govt , soldiers , civilians , oh yeah the freaking zombies ... overrun a country , turn everyone into zombies, send in few soldiers to do something special..
Now I am not going to give much away just try not to get bitten because Jack simply doesn’t react well to that..and if you are a whiny little weasel you might just get a punch in the face..try to be a good boy cause he may just toss you ....well read and find out....
